If she'd been looking for consolation, Genny had chosen the wrong dinner partners. If anything, she was seeping further into her gloominess, despite the uplift she had first felt at discovering that others had returned.

"Sounds like the school isn't as abandoned as first thought then."

"I wish I could say that I was happy about that, but I'm not."  Before tonight, had she been told that there were people living at the castle, Genny would have been happy about it, but now having encountered the evidence of the resident(s), she decidedly fell into the other camp. That thought made her feel marginally better about the two surly witches she now faced.

"Someone wants Ravenclaw Commons to stay off-limits."  Unfortunately, Jez was probably correct.

"Which is bullshit!" Genny snapped bitterly, then cringed at her outburst. Jeez, she really was off kilter tonight. "Sorry, it's not that I disagree with you, it's because I agree with your interpretation, but not the situation."

When Jez mentioned the sleeping bags, her shoulders slumped and she thrust her fork even more violently into the pumpkin mash she was creating.  Of course, the hat had mentioned that both the Slytherin and Hufflepuff common rooms were open and habitable, which meant that neither of the other two women would be in her same boat.

Giving up on her mash, Genny popped some of the less pulverized pumpkin into her mouth as Jez asked about the Slytherin commons.  It was a good question, but due to her own experience, she was a little more concerned with the approach.  "And how are the lower levels looking?  Did you run into anything on your way down?"
